Title: Towards
utilization of energy efficient ground source heat pump
in tropical country

Abstract: Space heating and
cooling by using Ground Coupled Heat Exchanger, known as
Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) is one of the direct
utilization of Geothermal resources. It has been used in
many countries, especially in four season countries to
fulfil both heating and cooling demand. The GSHP system
taking advantages of constant underground temperature
throughout the years and could significantly reduce the
electricity consumption compared to those normal Air
Conditioning (Air Source Heat Pump, ASHP). Despite its
potential, there are several factors that hinder the
utilization of Ground Source Heat Pump in many
countries, especially in tropical countries. For
example, social barriers such as lack of information
regarding GSHP technology. Technical barriers include
lack of information, technical barrier such as high
initial cost, lack of data regarding the utilization of
GSHP in tropical countries, unknown technical
uncertainties, etc. To provide technical information of
GSHP utilization in tropical countries, various data
analyses are currently being carried out considering
data from installed GSHP system in Thailand and Vietnam.
The analyses cover various technical factors, such as,
long term performances, potential power consumption
reduction, effect of local and regional groundwater
system as well as optimization of horizontal and
vertical heat exchanger configurations.
