Abstract: To study the change of
life style “before and after” rural electrification in
rural communities, we have started an international
collaboration research which focuses on the interior
Sarawak, Malaysia. Several rural villages in Sarawak
have been identified around the Batang Ai area, where
some of the villages received electrifications via
renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy,
while some others remained unelectrified due to their
more remote geographical location. We have selected 4
Iban communities at Batang Ai with different rural
electrification plans. The change of the energy usage
pattern and living life style of these villages under
different rural electrification schemes are being
studied. Based on the findings on the differences and/or
similarities, the more effective approach of
implementing rural electrification will be deduced. At
the first stage of this project, site inspections and
interview based surveys on the quality of life (QOL) of
locals have been conducted. Preliminary results of
survey on QOL indicated although the incomes are lower
than average, 90% villagers are satisfied with their
situation and lives. Actually, they are in good health
both in physically and in mentally. However, personal
activities, i.e. watching movies or going for shopping,
are at very low level because their access to
transportation is very poor.
