Reflection

Abstract: Sustainable
architecture has arisen as an effort in architectural
design since last decades. It can be interpreted as an
approach to architectural design that minimizes resource
consumption, utilizes natural energy, assuages
environmental damages, and improves human health. More
decisively, it can also be considered as a tool to
raising people’s awareness of environmental protection
or in other words a reaction to mother nature, which
always cohabits and appreciates manhood. The most
important aspect of sustainability is identification of
different areas which escalate its power in architecture
world, namely i) site selection, ii) energy consumption,
iii) indoor environmental quality, iv) water
consumption, v) waste disposal etc. This paper will
review the methods and technologies in few of these
areas that should be retained to create the
sustainability of the built environment of Auroville.
This paper will also explore the various dimensions of
sustainable living, practices and planning processes in
Auroville. It will emphasize the innovations and
sustainable processes of the experimental community and
highlight the day-to-day operations from the individual
level, to the organizational and how they are centered
around green practices.
